TITANIC: A CENTURY-OLD LEGEND

Although it happened many years before our time, everybody knows the story of the Titanic – the famous transatlantic liner that struck an iceberg in the North Atlantic en route to New York and sank with the loss of around 1,500 lives. This year is the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic and nowhere is the celebration on a stronger keel than in Belfast, the city where she was built.

As Ireland is one of the most popular destinations for the Spanish during the summer, then Belfast should be high up on the list of tourist attractions to visit. The ‘Titanic Belfast’ museum opened its doors before Easter this year and provides a wealth of history, information and experiences based on the Titanic and the legend that has been created around it. The building comprises 6 floors and 14,000 square metres of exhibition space, and the façade has been constructed in the form of 4 bows at a similar height to that of the liner. The different areas of the exhibition include the launching of Titanic, details of life on board and the last hours before the tragedy. One of the highlights of the visit occurs in the final stages where you can ‘dive’ virtually between the wreckage on the sea bed at a depth of 4,000 metres.

Add to this some news items of the time and films or literature that have kept the legend alive throughout the last 100 years and you will agree that a more complete ‘voyage’ into the history of the Titanic is nearly impossible.

So, apart from practising your ‘hard-earned’ English this summer, why not pay a visit, and maybe even your respects, to 1,500 people who won’t be able to enjoy the experience.

If you’ve been thinking about going to London this year, either for a holiday or to make that decisive step you’ve been pondering over for the last couple of years, now’s the time to go. This year’s full to the brim of exciting events that are sure to make your trip more enjoyable than ever.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will give you the chance to soak up the atmosphere of a city celebrating Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne. From the start of Spring you will be able to visit famous buildings related to the Royal family, see exhibitions of private collections and look around the most famous ‘house’ in England….Buckingham Palace. However, the main events will take place at the beginning of June: an open-air lunch in the streets of London (weather permitting), the Thames river pageant and the spectacular lighting of 2012 beacons across the country. A quick visit to www.thediamondjubilee.org whet your appetite for more.

Charles Dickens was born 200 years ago this year and there will be many activities to celebrate this bicentenary. Film, theatre, exhibitions, festivals…there are plenty of activities to take part in or attend to be part of this celebration. Dickens or Shakespeare…who was the best, who’s your favourite?…check out www.dickens2012.org and www.worldshakespearefestival.org.uk and judge for yourself!!

The 2012 Olympic Games will be a must for any serious sports enthusiast. The sports ‘die-hards’ will be doing their best to be there so isn’t it worth making that extra effort to follow your country…or would you prefer to save your hard-earned money and follow your national football team to the European Football Championship in Poland and the Ukraine. www.london2012.com and www.uefa.com have all the latest info!!
